Reframe Sunshine.
About the structure of adaptation and a house that rotates to follow the sun.
Naturally we can close the door behind us, lock the window. But just because we’re inside it certainly doesn’t mean that the weather will stay outside. Heat, cold, rain, wind, humidity – how do we keep our indoor climate stable and comfortable as the weather becomes more extreme? How do we create bright living spaces within an optimal temperature range with the least amount of materials and energy? With these questions in mind we visit the Arquitectura-G practice in Barcelona, which has made a name for itself with sensitive refurbishments and intelligent use of airy, shady transitional spaces. We then take a trip into the past to Marcellise, where the Italian engineer Angelo Invernizzi built a monumental mechanical house, completed in 1935, that rotates to follow the sun. This time travel leaves us with the question: what can the present learn from the past, and vice versa?
