Century-old millstone house recast as contemporary jewel.
The brief called for the addition of a light-flooded annexe to a 1902-built millstone house in the historic quarter of Bourg-la-Reine. At the same time, the original charm of the century-old building had to be preserved.
The slim glass wall and window frames allow the indoor spaces to be flooded with daylight, thus dissolving the boundary between inside and outside. The lift-and-slide doors serve to maximise the glazed area and admit extra light into the interior. The special mechanism, whereby the movable sash lifts slightly when opened and drops back onto the threshold when closed, allows the use of flat (only 2 cm high) thresholds with very high weathertightness. The combination of two lift-and-slide doors without mullion further ensures a maximum opening width. All products fitted on the interior and exterior are made from easy-care aluminium in Pale Bronze – thereby helping to reconcile the historic fabric of the main building with the contemporary annexe.
